Filing Petitions: An Important Step In Campaign Season

This week was the deadline for all candidates wishing to run in the 2025 general election to file their petitions with the Onondaga County Board of Elections. This is an important step in the political process and one which officially begins the campaign season.

The current members of our Caucus who are running for re-election include:

  • Brian May (1st District)

  • Kevin Meaker (2nd District)

  • Timothy Burtis (3rd District)

  • Colleen Gunnip (4th District)

  • Julie Abbott (6th District)

  • Shawn Fiato (8th District)

  • Mark Olson (10th District)

  • Richard McCarron (11th District)

  • David Knapp (12th District)

  • Ken Bush Jr. (13th District)

  • Dr. Cody Kelly (14th District)

Legislator Debra Cody (5th District) has decided not to seek re-election and will conclude her service to our county residents at the end of this year. David Carnie will run in the 5th District. He currently serves as the 4th Ward Councilor in the Town of Salina.

The Caucus also welcomes Bonnke Sekarore who will run in the 9th District, which is primarily Syracuse's Northside. Bonnke grew up in the area after coming to the U.S. as a refugee from the Democratic Republic of the Congo and has been active in the community for years.

Legislator Burtis, who is serving as the Legislature's Chairman, says, "We have a great team that works hard to ensure county tax dollars are being spent wisely, while providing county services that our residents expect."

Thank you in advance for your support between now and Election Day, which is November 4.
