Republican Onondaga County Legislators Celebrate Micron Technology, Inc.’s Investment In Onondaga County

Years of hard work finally paid off, when Micron Technology, Inc. announced yesterday they had selected Onondaga County to build what they call “the largest semiconductor fabrication facility in the history of the United States.”

“You can pick your superlative to describe the Micron announcement – transformative, game changer, “Erie Canal moment” – they all apply” says Legislature Chairman James Rowley (2nd District).

Micron will invest up to $100 billion dollars over the next 20 years to construct a new facility at the White Pine Commerce Park in Clay.  The site could eventually include four 600,000 square foot cleanrooms and is expected to create nearly 50,000 jobs in the process – 9,000 of them permanent, high paying positions.

Chairman Rowley adds, “Our partners at the federal and state level were crucial in getting this to the finish line, but this doesn’t happen without the County Executive. His diligence and perseverance in getting the White Pine site to the level needed to attract Micron was the spark that ignited this economic development explosion. It’s been an honor to witness this as Chairman and I look forward to the journey ahead.”

The Onondaga County Legislature’s Republican Caucus has fully supported and invested in development at White Pine over the past decade.

“From shovel-ready improvements to sewer capacity to a revolving fund to enhance marketability, the Legislature has been a strategic partner in every step of the process” says Majority Leader Brian May (1st District), who is realistic about what comes next. “The sheer weight and scale of future decisions will be beyond comprehension for many—but every level of government has a stake in this and now it’s the County’s turn to step up.”

White Pine Commerce Park is located within the Legislature’s 14th District, which is represented by Legislator Cody Kelly. He says this project will transform the region’s economy for years to come.

“I would like to thank County Executive Ryan McMahon and his team for the work they’ve done to secure an investment of this magnitude” says Legislator Kelly. “Micron will provide tremendous employment opportunities, engage in philanthropy and charitable giving, and reduce the tax burden on homeowners throughout the county.”

Legislator Timothy Burtis (3rd District) is chair of the Legislature’s Planning & Economic Development Committee. “We have all known what a great place Onondaga County is to live, work, and raise a family” he says. “Micron announced that they are excited to join our community with an unbelievable 100 Billion dollar investment. I am honored to have played a small role in developing White Pine and welcome them to Central New York!”

Other members of the Republican Caucus are just as excited about this historic investment in Onondaga County.

  • Legislator Colleen Gunnip (4th District): “Micron’s investment in our community will bring local jobs back to the days when manufacturers like General Electric, Carrier and General Motors were operating in our County. What a great boost for Onondaga!”

  • Legislator Debra Cody (5th District): “Today is the culmination of years of hard work, spearheaded by our County Executive. I've been proud to support this project at the Legislature along the way. A dream is finally becoming a reality, and our County will be transformed by this once in a generation investment.”

  • Legislator Julie Abbott (6th District): “We pushed this boulder uphill and did it! Real leadership requires strong investment and laser focused vision while funneling out the ‘noise’. Teamwork makes the dream work, with County Executive Ryan McMahon leading the pack! The chips we plan to make right here in Onondaga County are used in producing cars, appliances, anything with computers…lest we forget, here on U.S. soil for national security! This is REAL LEADERSHIP!!!”

  • Legislator Mark Olson (10th District): “This project will transform our community for decades to come, Micron will bring high tech, high paying jobs that will help our local families and our economy. I appreciate the efforts of the federal & state governments. I’d especially like to thank County Executive Ryan McMahon and his team for making this a reality.”

  • Legislator John McBride (11th District): “This announcement proves that nothing is impossible! Great news for CNY!”

  • Legislator David Knapp (12th District): “For far too many years, we’ve been exporting an incredible amount of talent from Central New York to other parts of the country. This is due to the perceived lack of opportunities here in Onondaga County. The announcement from Micron is a huge step to changing that thought, and I congratulate the County Executive for taking this dream and turning it into reality.”

  • Legislator Ken Bush, Jr. (13th District): “The Micron decision to locate in Onondaga County is both exciting and challenging. The numbers being talked about are staggering and almost beyond comprehending. I can’t help to be concerned about the residents living in the northern suburbs. Fortunately the massive impact will take place over several years. Thank you to all those who have worked on bringing Micron to Onondaga County and Central New York.”

Micron Technology, Inc. says site preparation work at White Pine Commerce Park will start in 2023, with construction beginning the following year.
