State Fair Kickoff Fundraiser Held

An annual end-of-summer fundraiser drew its largest crowd to date, and gave local Legislators and their supporters a chance to get to know each other on a more personal level.

The Onondaga County Legislature’s Republican Caucus hosted their annual State Fair Kick Off party recently at Jammer’s Sports Bar & Restaurant in Syracuse. Guests mingled on their outside patio under the setting summer sun and enjoyed good food and drink and the live music of Letizia. At one point in the evening, Legislature Chairman Timothy T. Burtis spoke about keeping the momentum going during this non-election year for Legislators and introduced the Caucus members standing behind him, including Majority Leader Brian May and Legislators Kevin Meaker, Colleen Gunnip, Deb Cody, Julie Abbott, Mark Olson, Dave Knapp, Ken Bush Jr. and Cody Kelly.

“Political campaigns are a team game and we need a lot of people on our team to help get the word out about our great candidates” said Chairman Burtis, who represents the people of the 3rd District. “It’s exciting to get people together and try to get them excited and engaged for what’s to come. I’m very encouraged by the turnout and the conversations.”

“The fact that we have one of most financially stable and financially strong counties in New York State isn’t an accident” Majority Leader May, the 1st District Legislator, shared with the crowd. “It’s a partnership and due to a lot of hard work and taking a lot of hard stands on things that matter to this community. We’re the people out there in the districts that are coming together to make policy that makes a difference for everyone in our county.”

Platinum level sponsors of the event included Suit-Kote Corporation, United Auto Supply, Jammer’s Sports Bar & Restaurant and Strada Mia Restaurant. Many other companies and individuals also made generous donations which are also appreciated by the RLCC.

Given the event’s theme, several Legislators shared thoughts on the New York State Fair. Legislator Olson (10th District) says he loves seeing the agricultural exhibits and eating Fair food, while Legislator Kelly (14th District), a big fan of live music, often goes for the concerts.

Legislator Gunnip (4th District) says she usually goes to the State Fair with her mother. Last year, she brought her 2-year-old granddaughter to see the animals. “This year I would like to bring her back to go on some rides and maybe see Blippi at the Chevy Court” she said.

Legislator Meaker (2nd District) is a huge fan of the State Fair. He says he tries to get there at least eight days of its run. He enjoys foods like the baked potato and Twin Trees pizza, adding “You get a chance to enjoy the sites and the scenery and then you sit down on the Footsie Wootsie. There’s nothing like the Great New York State Fair.”
