Working together, Onondaga County Legislators approve more than $7 million dollars in funding for local towns, villages and the City of Syracuse

Onondaga County towns and villages, and the City of Syracuse, will be receiving more than $7 million dollars in mortgage tax payments.

The Onondaga County Legislature voting unanimously at its June Session to authorize the payments. A 1% mortgage tax is collected by the Onondaga County Clerk whenever a mortgage is filed, based on the mortgaged amount. The money is then apportioned out with half of it going to towns, villages and the City (in proportion to the amount of tax those locales generated). The other half is split evenly between CENTRO and the State of New York Mortgage Association.

While all towns and villages will benefit, the Town of Clay and the City of Syracuse will be receiving the largest checks, each over $1.3 million dollars.

“I’m glad that we do it” says the Legislature’s Chairman James Rowley. “It’s a nice benefit to the towns and villages where we live.”

“I think it’s fantastic that the county does this” says Republican Majority Leader Brian May. “We’re one of only a few counties in New York State that share this revenue with our local municipalities and I know it makes a big difference at the local level.”
